A Crown for a Crown – Friday, February 25th, 2021

Matthew 27:29 NLT

“They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they kneeled before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”

One of the highlights of the cross was when a crown of thorns was placed on the head of our Lord. This crown was a symbol of shame, ridicule, and mockery. It was a crown showing how He became sin for us so that we might become “the righteousness of God in Him.” But though He took this crown of thorns at the cross, after the cross, Hebrews 2:9 says, “He was crowned with glory and honour.”

The crown of thorns he wore was a symbol of our curse. The sin of the first man brought curses upon the earth. One of which is “cursed is the ground because of you. In tears you shall eat of its fruit all the days of your life; ‘thorns’ and thistles shall it bring to you” (Genesis 3:17–18). Unknowingly, the Roman soldiers made a crown from an object of curse, thorns,” and placed it on our Lord. But it was all in God’s will to show how He took the crown of your curse and mine, so that we may receive a different crown as He has received after the cross.

This crown is called the crown of righteousness. 2 Timothy 4:8 says that this crown is laid up for those who are eagerly awaiting the second coming of Christ. We haven’t received this crown yet, but we shall receive it when Christ returns. Friend, there is so much to look forward to upon Christ’s return, one of which is a crown of righteousness. This crown is a crown of blessing.
